Indian Institute of Foreign Trade – IIFT

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) Delhi is arguably the best B-school in the country when it comes to specialising in International Business. It is a public institute established by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 1963 to help professionalize the country’s foreign trade management and increase exports. IIFT uses its separate entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for the admission process. There are three other campuses, one in Kolkata, one in Kakinada, which is not yet operational, and one in Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania.

From 2020, there will be some changes to the exam. Firstly, the format is changed to a computer-based test from a paper-based one. Secondly, the NTA will conduct the exam from now on and not IIFT. Also, IIFT 2020 will not grant you admission to the Dar es Salaam campus. Still, the most significant difference is the number of sections has been increased to six. These are English Grammar, Vocabulary and Comprehension, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation, and Quantitative Analysis. The duration of the exam is two hours, with no sectional time limit. The total marks for the exam are 100, but the number of questions is changed every year. Last year it was 114.

Analysis based on last year’s paper
Section Total questions Marks for correct answer Total marks Weightage in shortlisting
Reading comprehension 16 1.0 16 16%
Verbal ability 20 0.75 15 15%
Quantitative analysis 20 1.0 20 20%
Data interpretation 20 1.0 20 20%
Logical Reasoning 20 1.0 20 20%
General Awareness 18 0.5 9 9%
Total 114 100 100%

The number of candidates appearing for the IIFT exam is more than 60000 every year, and only about 2000 are called for further selection process. Written ability test, Group discussion, and personal interview are used for final selection. The difficulty level is more or less like the CAT. Some also argue that IIFT is the toughest MBA entrance exam in the country. You must form a distinctive plan of action if you want to get into this prestigious institute.
